Five factors to consider when choosing a carbon steel grade

Carbon steel is a metal alloy, with the carbon content of 0.05% to about 2.0%, and has trace amounts of other elements like manganese, silicon and copper in negligible quantity. With the industries adapting to perfectly balance metal combination to suit their needs, carbon steel finds prominence in many applications. In this post, we’ll discuss five things to ponder upon before choosing the right carbon steel grade.

Here are five factors to consider before choosing a carbon steel grade.

    1. Welded Carbon Steel: Various types of carbon possess excellent welding ability. Certain carbon grades, like C1141 and C1144, cannot be welded, due to their additional sulfur content. The content causes weld solidification, which may result in cracking. Certain carbon grades, such as C1045 may require post weld heat treatment. Hence, before selecting a carbon steel grade it is important to look into the welding property of the carbon steel.

    2. Machined Carbon Steel: Certain grades of lower carbon steel like C1010 and C1018 possess good machining ability. Carbon steel like C1141 and C1144 have a higher amount of carbon due to their additional sulfur content which can be machined very easily. Thus, it is very important to look into the carbon steel grade which is machined.

    3. Good Formability: Lower carbon grades such as C1008 and C1010 are considered to be ductile owing to their mechanical properties. Lower carbon steel possesses more formability than higher carbon steel. Also, owing to variations in the mechanical properties of carbon, it is more formable than other alloying elements, which makes it the best choice for any industrial application.

    4. Heat Treatment: Carbon steels like C1045 and C1141 can easily be heat treated owing to their 0.30 % of carbon content. A36 is one of the carbon steel, which has traces of other elements, which increase their hardenability. Lower carbon steel having carbon content under 0.20% cannot be easily heat treated, which further gives carbon steel higher hardness and strength.

    5. Corrosion Resistant: Carbon steels are mainly composed of iron which oxidizes forming rust. Therefore, selecting a galvanized or plated carbon steel is an excellent option to prevent corrosion. Adding oil/ paints can further help in the oxidation of iron which can prevent corrosion and help increase the longevity of the carbon steel grade.
